Mandala Meditations

The circle is an archetype in cultures all around the world, a sacred symbol of wholeness and completion.  The Sanskrit word “mandala” simply means circle. I learned the practice of mandala meditation from music therapist, Mary Morreale (empowerinnovations.com) who remains a guide and mentor.  I begin each session by taking out a piece of paper with an empty circle drawn on it.  First, I write down my intention- an issue or feeling that I would like to explore.  Then I meditate, sometimes listening to music but more often in silence, until an image forms in my mind and I know that it’s time to start drawing.  This image may be based on either my external surroundings or internal landscape.  When I do a series of mandalas, I often use prior drawings- or a section of a prior drawing as a basis for my meditation. When I have finished the mandala, I ask the questions, “Where am I in this picture today?” and inquire what the mandala has to teach me.  Finally I write down what I’ve learned.
